A double edged sword?

Today, in the so called ‘modern india’ we were all very proud of the Rohtak sisters who had beaten the boys in a bus that were apparently ‘harassing’ them. We had a huge office lunch discussing and praising the brave hearts and also tainting the other cowards in the bus who were nowhere near to help them. And also on how they were so strong to have such a head on attitude in a patriarchal state like Haryana, where the only stories heard of were of dowry deaths, honor killings and rapes. I smiled when I slept that night. Times are changing, for good, I thought! However, the media hype around it and the state declaring awards for them was a bit pushing it too much, but nonetheless I chose to ignore it!

My pleasure was short lived as the next video featured the other day, of the same sisters bashing someone innocent in a park. Bullies, were they? And each time they were beating someone, they had a camera following them? Where were they? The Bigg Boss house, eh? Fishy, it rang a bell. Too much to the story then it appears on the outside. Were the sisters really harassed? Or were they staging an Oscar winning performance and giving all brave and proud interviews to the media? Were the apparent ‘molesters’ really guilty? Or were they just entwined in the trap of being the supposedly stronger sex?

Women Empowerment, seriously feels like a double edged sword. The witnesses around cannot be placed trust on. The media is out creating a ruckus and grabbing eyeballs. The state government is announcing awards to win brownie points, only to hold them back and reconsider whether these were victims or bullies? Sign, the judiciary, as ever is nothing but confused.

Such instances make us question even the genuine of cases. I would just hope people kept their acting skills limited to plays and not create complicated cases when there are already lakhs of others pending. We have grown so cynical that it is impossible to pass a straightforward judgement on anything, and these cases complicate things further. How will justice ever be served? God alone knows!
